RFID | Standards

EPCglobal Inc. has taken over the efforts of MIT's AutoID Center, the original non-profit organization that helped develop RFID system technology, and currently leads the effort to develop worldwide standards for RFID, covering both hardware (tags, readers, wireless protocols) and software (data filtering, middleware, application, and security interfaces, etc.). Over 1000 member organizations, including retailers, manufacturers, academic organizations, and technology providers have joined EPCglobal.   The EPCglobal standards can be reviewed here.

Some of the biggest retailers in the world—Target, Tesco, Wal-Mart—and the U.S. Department of Defense have said they plan to use EPC technology to track goods in their supply chain. The pharmaceutical, tire, defense and other industries are also moving to adopt the technology. EPCglobal ratified the ALE standard in December 2004, and the EPCIS standard in April 2007. Bent Systems was a key contributor and co-author of both ALE and EPCIS.
